Walking with a Camera

On of my favourite things to do is go for a walk with my camera. Although any camera you have with you at the time will do, personally, I prefer a dedicated camera as opposed to a smartphone. Exploring new locations is always fun, but revisiting a local woodland feels like visiting an old friend. I have a small collection of places close by that I frequently visit. Most are only a five minute walk or a short drive away. Packing light is also important, usually just one camera and one lens in a small sling bag with extra batteries. When on a walk, shoot whatever catches your eye. However, I will often limit myself by shooting only in black and white, only shooting 24 photos or by using an older point and shoot camera. A lot of times I will go with a set of ideas of what I would like to do and then find myself doing something completely different. So just be open to whatever comes your way. Here is a list of twelve points for your next photo walk.

1. Have fun.

2. Have a good pair of shoes.

3. Carry light, one  small camera and lens in a small bag.

4. Check the weather forecast for the day.

5. Pause and have a moment of stillness before you begin your walk.

6. Walk slowly.

7. Take the camera out of the bag and turn it on.

8. Change your angle of view or position.

9. Try different places and revisit old ones.

10. Have patience.

11. When in doubt take the shot anyway.

12. Be grateful.
